The Eden course at St Andrews in one of seven public golf courses that belong to The St Andrews Links. We play this challenging Par 70 golf course on a warm sunny day on the 3rd September 2010. The Eden course is adjacent to “The Old Course” where many greats have walked, played and maybe potentially shanked???? – Who knows about the latter but nonetheless its great to be here and the first time Stu or I have played golf in this area. We play the course off the yellow tees and it measures 5869 yards a mere pussycat he says….well its not at all easy and the greens are very severe (especially the first!). The course as you would expect is tough and very tight so you do need to make a number of good shots. We were also very fortunate to have very little wind so that made this course a little easier for us which was reflected in our scores of 76 (Craig) and 86 (Stu). In the front nine Craig managed to get to the turn in 3 over with a double bogey at the 2nd which was purely down to driving into a fairway bunker (very deep) and followed up with a 3 putt followed by another three putt at the very short 4th (251 yards) a hole you can drive however very much a risk reward hole and Craig took the risk and got hee haw reward so a 5 was carded. Seven pars were carded on the remaining holes with one or two birdies just slipping by. Stu got off to a flyer and demonstrated again that he can only really play golf on the coast. His whole posture and confidence when on the tight links fairways turns him into a different golfer. Stu carded 8 bogeys and one par which came at the tricky par 3 5th where he hit a sawn off 5 wood (his words not mine) into the heart of the green and only just missed his super dongo (birdie!). The back half for Craig saw a pulled tee shot at the par 3 10th resulting in a second double bogey of the round and took him to 5 over however, seven pars in the last eight holes saw a back half of 38 (3 over) to card a 76. A number of good birdie chances were there however the tricky greens resulted in a lot of putts just sliding by. Stu continued his solid play with two pars coming at the 14th and 18th to card a back half of 43 to score 86. The course was tremendous and in great condition as you would expect. We started talking to a couple of lady members on the Par 5 16th who very kindly made a donation to the Charity so thank you ladies and we found out that as residents in St Andrews you get all the courses for £140….unbelievable!!!!! – The cost of a round of golf is £40 and is very good Value for Money and would recommend this to all golfers out there. |
