   Newcastleton Golf Course
Newcastleton Newcastleton

Newcastleton golf course is set on the side of Holm Hill.  Situated 21 miles south of Hawick and 25 mile North of Carlisle the course offers fantastic views over the Liddlesdales Hills and the town of Newcastleton.   It opened in 1894 and is one of the oldest golf courses in Scotland

The course is actually 18 holes a 90 hole layout however there are two sets of tees.  We were gutted as it was our 12th game in three days we were on our last legs and wanted to play 9 holes and get home.  The course measures 5491 yards and plays longer as the ball does not run anywhere and it is a rather hilly course.  The first three holes take you up the hill with a par 3 of 144 yards but be sure to take a club or two more Craig was short both times and Stu long both time.  You play the 4th along the top of the course and then down on the 5th short par 3 and then across the hill for the 6th and back again for the 7th.  The 8th you have to walk a fair bit back to play to the bottom of a hill then up to the green its measures 311 yards however Craig hit good 4 iron and then laced a 6 iron (no wind mind) to get the ball up.  The design of the hole makes this hole play at least another 50 yards longer.  The 9th is a long par 4 (452 yards) which changes to a Par 5 (512 yards) the second time round.  This hole plays straight back down the mountain and doglegs left to a small hidden green.

The signature hole has to be the 9th/18th with spectacular views and just the fact it’s a good golfing hole requiring you to hit good shots and use your noggin’.  We struggled to enjoy it mainly due to fatigue however if you were in this area its worth a game.
