   Langholm Golf Course
Langholm Langholm

Langholm golf course is a lovely 9 hole golf course situated in the Borders.  It was founded in 1892 and its first captain of the club was Moses…….Jesus I hear you say! No its Moses, Thomas Moses a Director of the famous cloth makers Reid and Taylor.  Interesting fact this is the company who manufacture the cloth for Augusts’s “Green Jackets”.

We arrive at Langholm at 7.30 to find the course deserted apart from a few green keepers.  First of all a big thank you to Willy Goodfellow who gave us a concession to play here it is very much appreciated.  The course is set up high on the hill a typical Borders course.  The course was in great condition and had some lovely holes and stunning views over the town and beyond.  The golf was reasonably good considering the golf (and the bevy!) the night before.  The course opens with a straight forward par 4 of 368 yards slightly up hill and then you play back to a dog leg left par 4 of 400 yards.  This is followed by a long par 5 up hill which really needs two solid shots to get there but you would settle for three.  The 4th is a lovely par 3 of which we noticed that a member some years ago whilst playing an 18 hole tournament holed his tee shot twice in the same round at this hole…fascinating…..I hope he paid for two nights out!  We managed to both make par.  The 5th is a short par 4 that saw Craig top his tee shot in front of the green keepers which was quite embarrassing.  Stu ripped it almost past him :-).  The long 6th is the hardest hole on the course playing along the top of the course it slightly dog legs up to left.  Out of bounds left all the way up and tree lined on the right makes this a tough hole.  Craig managed to birdie it and Stu a par (so not that tough!).  The 7th has to be the signature hole with a warning beside the tee stating “In the interests of public safety all golfers are respectively requested not to try drive the green at this hole” (see gallery) – brilliant.  Was tempted to go for it but green keepers where around and after the last drive wanted to keep it cool so Craig played a 4 iron then wedged over the canyon to the green.  Stu managed to get just onto the green in three and holed a monster putt for par (his 4th single putt in a row).  The 8th takes you back along towards the club house and then the 9th a short par 3 completes the round.  Craig almost made a hole in one by stiffing his 9 iron to a foot behind the hole and made two.  Stu flirted with the bunkers and walked off with a 4.  Scores saw Craig 36 (one over) and Stu 43.  Not a bad effort and we really enjoyed the course certainly worth a visit if your down in this area.
